How did you choose your mala? Were you drawn to a particular energy or gemstone?
I chose my Bohemian Beauty Mala for the pearls. I feel so connected to the ocean and having pearls near me makes me feel a little like a mermaid. Yup, a mermaid!
When did you start your yoga/meditation practice? What are some of the benefits you have received from your practice?
I started yoga over 11 years ago, and with that, small bouts of meditation here and there. My meditation began in savasana where I started to focus on just my breath, and from there it evolved into a regular practice.
Do you have a favorite mantra or intention to meditate with?
It depends on what’s happening in my life. Right now, I repeat “I am healthy. I am strong. I am calm”. Other times, I repeat “ram” or “om” or “love.” Sometimes my meditation is done without mantra - just pure listening.
Any tips for those are are just starting to use a mala in meditation?
Start by just feeling the mala in your hands. The weight, the texture, the space between the beads. Then practice moving each bead along, one at a time and feel the difference between the beads. Let the mala itself be your meditation at first. Let all your focus be on the mala and getting to know it.
I like to think of mine as a friend - the one I call when I need some calming. And I’d say go ahead and talk to your mala — there’s energy in everything! It’s a great listener and you can release things this way if you need to.
Oh, and thank it once you’re done. Gratitude is powerful! Your mala becomes more sacred when you treat it with respect and love.
