You and Your Mala: Danielle Flynn
How did you choose your mala? Was there a certain intention you were looking to bring into your life?
I think I chose my mala, the Bohemian Beauty, based on my style. I’ve always been drawn to pearls — they’re pretty without being flashy. I love subtle beauty.
I wouldn’t say that I was looking for a specific intention as my intentions tend to vary daily based on how I’m feeling/what’s happening in my life and what I feel I need. However, I do like that pearls symbolize purity; freedom from anything that debases, contaminates, or pollutes. It’s a great reminder to start every day with a pure heart.
When did you start your yoga/meditation practice? What are some of the benefits you have received from your practice?
I started my practice about two years ago when a new hot yoga studio opened in the city I live in. I loved the sweat. I had a gym membership at the time and couldn’t justify a yoga membership as well, so I would go occasionally.
"I traded in my gym pass for a yoga membership and I haven`t looked back since."
Then, about a year ago a yoga instructor came into the store that I work at, we were partnering with her for a business venture. She invited me to her studio to try a class and after the first class I was hooked!I hadn’t been aware up until this point that there were different styles of yoga and Vinyasa was where my heart was.
I traded in my gym pass for a yoga membership and I haven`t looked back since. While the gym was doing good things for my body, physically, I`ve found that yoga strengthens my body and my mind. Some days I would have to force myself to go to the gym, but not yoga. I look forward to every practice.
What is your favorite way to take a moment for yourself each day?
Right now I`m fortunate to have a job that starts a little later in the day, so every morning I wake up early (without an alarm clock..SO nice!) and I usually have 2-3 hours before I start work. I am a morning person so I love having this time to myself to start my day doing things I enjoy.
Some days that’s a few Sun Salutations or guided meditation. Other days it`s a cup of tea and a good book.
What is your current favorite yoga pose?
Dancer. I love this pose in all its variations. You can`t help but feel beautiful in this pose, and because it`s a standing pose you can pretty much break it out anywhere you feel inspired to do so.
Any tips for anyone starting their own yoga or meditation journey?
I would say to try different studios, styles, and instructors. We’re all unique so there is no one-size-fits-all yoga/meditation path. Find what speaks to you and flow with that.
