We love when families practice yoga and mindfulness together. In this edition of You & Your Mala we chat with Carli-Jean Loptson from YOGO.tv.


How did you choose your mala? Were you drawn to a particular energy or gemstone?

I have the Namaste Mala. I was instantly drawn to the natural earthy feel it it had. As soon as I put it on I knew I didn't want to take it off, and I don't often! It makes me feel grounded.

Both Koen and Porter have malas from the Little Pieces Collection. When did they start wearing malas?

When Porter was in Grade One I would teach her class yoga at school and when it was over and I had to leave she would get sad so I started putting kisses on my mala bracelets and giving them to her to wear until I picked her up at the end of the day.

This started a tradition when I took her to school in the mornings. Also for both her and Koen at bedtime if they were needing extra love in the palm of their hands. They now have their own Malas and wear them very proudly.

How has having a yoga and meditation practice benefited you as a mom? Have you seen any benefits for the kids as they develop their own playful practices?

Yoga really keeps me balanced. I am a much better Mom when I take time out to practice, as it gives me a chance to settle and breath. It makes it easier to stay in the moment with my kids and to take in what they say before I react. When I am feeling like a crazy Mom we all know in my house, I need to go do yoga!!

Kids are natural yogis. They want to bend, stretch and breath and feel like a part of something bigger. I find if I just give them the space to play or I get on my mat they just want to join in.

We all crave this in our bodies and in our spirit and as we get older it sometimes fades if not nourished, but kids just know this. I learn so much from my two kids, they are the best teachers.
