Ritual for Winter Solstice

Ritual for Winter Solstice

We are near to closing out the calendar year with the Winter Solstice on Dec 21 (Summer Solstice if you are in the Southern Hemisphere!)

This time of year is marked by a decrease in daylight hours and longer nights. Home and hearth, a turning inward, and time for self-reflection abound during these colder winter months.

When we start to tune into the cycles of our bodies, the Earth, and the seasons, we are more in touch with the spiritual flow of nature and the world we exist in. The Sun will have moved into Capricorn on this day urging us to take a practical approach to our spiritual practices.

Here is an easy 3 step ritual you can do on the day of the winter solstice to be more in tune, in touch, and in love with this time of year.

Ritual to Honor the Winter Solstice

Materials Needed

  • Candle
  • Carving Tool (pencil, pen, small knife, etc.)
  • Matches or Lighter

Steps

  1. With your carving tool make a symbol of a heart on your candle to represent your home/family
  2. Light the candle on the evening as the Sun goes down on the day of the Solstice
  3. Placing your hands in prayer pose stay mindful and present of the energy in this moment. Personalize your Solstice ritual by choosing to repeat a favored mantra, set an intention for your home/hearth/family, or say prayers of good wishes for yourself and loved ones.

Lighting candles this time of year is symbolic of the comfort that comes from familiarity and home. As we spend more time around close friends and family we are also able to get more in touch with ourselves, relax, and take a break from the outside world.
