New Year Rituals

How to Bring in a Mindful New Year – Rituals to Close Out 2022

The end of the year is just around the corner, making this moment one open to potent rituals to bring intention into the closing out of 2022 and the ringing in of 2023. Here are four rituals we invite you to partake in during this time to mark this collective moment of transition and allow you to move through the present energy with awareness, meaning, and mindfulness.

1. A Self-Energy Cleanse - Self-Care Ritual

Here is a gentle self-care ritual to support energetic cleansing, clarity, and nourishment needs for feeling well spiritually, emotionally, and physically. This ritual can be done regularly and especially on the 1st of the year to start you off with a fresh and renewed sense of self.

 You will need:

  • A selenite crystal (substitute clear quartz if you don’t have selenite)
  • An essential oil (recommended to use lavender, rosemary, or peppermint – but any will work)
  • A small bowl of olive or almond oil (1-2 tablespoons)

Ritual Steps

  1. First thing in the morning gather your materials and take a quiet moment for yourself
  2. Take the essential oil, drop a couple to a few drops into the dish of oil
  3. Put some of the oil in your hands and rub them together
  4. Bring your hands up near your nose, but not touching it, and take a deep inhale, letting the scent meet with your breath
  5. Continue to take some deep breaths here, allowing your breathing to cleanse and clarify your energy
  6. You can then choose to rub some of the oil on your shoulders, temples, etc. as feels right for you and your body's needs
  7. Then take the selenite crystal and wave the crystal through and around your entire body and energy field while taking some deep, cleansing breaths
  8. Make sure you wave the crystal over the palms of your hands as well as above your head, and below each foot
  9. Imagine energetic debris dissipating and your energy clearing and brightening
  10. When you feel aligned and ‘reset’ take a breath to close out the ritual

2. Crystal Practice - Gratitude Ritual

A way to bring a beautiful sense of harmony and balance into your spiritual practice is to take time for gratitude. As you approach 2023, this can be an excellent time to practice gratitude for where you’ve been and some of the experiences you have had. Take space to see where you have grown or experienced challenges as well as appreciate the special moments you have moved through.

You will need:

  • A piece of paper and a pen
  • Crystal of your choice (suggested malachite, rose quartz, emerald, citrine, or amethyst)

 Ritual Steps

  1. On any day leading up to New Year’s day gather your crystal and your piece of paper
  2. Hold onto the crystal, close your eyes, and take a breath to clear your mind and turn your attention to your heart center
  3. Open your eyes and set the crystal down
  4. Make a list on your paper of experiences from the past year you are grateful for or things upcoming you feel gratitude for
  5. Once you get to a list of about 5 or more read through the list
  6. Keep the crystal and list together for the first month of the year, maybe set up an altar or sacred spiritual space for these items
  7. And check in with your list at least once a week for the first month of 2023
  8. Read through each item on your list while holding onto the crystal
  9. Let the feeling of gratitude wash over you and help you reset, center, and ground yourself in the present and open into a heart of gratitude
  10. Set aside this crystal for the rest of this year as a reminder of what you are grateful for
  11. Anytime you feel called to a gratitude practice, you can hold onto this crystal, meditate and re-check in with yourself about your experiences with gratitude

3. Create a Personal Oracle - Intention Setting Ritual

With the potent energy of a New Year, now is an excellent time to set some intentions and put your energy into your dreams, deepening practices, and the spiritual dimensions yourself. Here is a practice for clearing the mind and setting a thoughtful point of focus to bring intention into the year ahead.

You will need:

  • A piece of paper and a pen
  • A bowl
  • Scissors (optional)
  • Candle and matches

Ritual Steps

  1. Gather your materials and find some space just for yourself
  2. Take a deep breath and light your candle
  3. And close your eyes and take a few moments to meditate
  4. While meditating focus on the breath, watching the rise and fall of your inhale and exhale
  5. After a few minutes have passed, open your eyes
  6. Turn your attention to your paper and rip or cut up the paper into 10 separate pieces
  7. Then, ask yourself what values, visions, or themes are important to you for the year ahead
  8. Take your time with this and as the ideas come to you, write each one down on one of the pieces of paper
  9. Once you have 10 themes written out, place them into the bowl
  10. Close your eyes again and take a deep breath
  11. Ask yourself, “What theme should be a point of focus for me in 2023?”
  12. Then, pick one out of the pieces of paper with your eyes closed
  13. Open your eyes and read the word and reflect on its meaning
  14. Keep this theme in mind as you move throughout the year and consider how it can guide you in being intentional, deepening your spiritual studies, or act as a support to bring you back to a point of focus

4. Candle Gazing - Reflection Ritual

You will need:

  • A candle and matches
  • Journal and pen (optional)

Ritual Steps

  1. Take a moment to yourself when you can be in solitude and silence.
  2. Set up a cozy space for yourself with pillows, meditation cushions, relaxing music, etc.
  3. Light your candle, then settle in and take 3 deep, cleansing breaths
  4. Gaze at the candle, turning your attention to the flame
  5. Allow your breathing to settle into a natural rhythm and continue to gaze at the candle for at least 5 and up to 10 minutes or more
  6. Do your best to keep your attention on the candle, letting your mind clear and come into a single point of focus
  7. Avoid judging yourself as your mind wanders and instead, gently invite yourself back to gaze at the candle
  8. After 5 to 10 minutes have passed and your mind feels clear, start reflecting on the events of the previous year
  9. Mentally engage with the ones that arise first
  10. And compassionately reflect and contemplate these experiences
  11. Note any insights or analysis that feels relevant to your personal journey
  12. You might want to write some thoughts down in your journal if you feel called
  13. And when you feel ready you can put out the candle and take a deep breath to close out the ritual

The Takeaway

Approach this transitional time with intention and ritual to invite meaning into the start of a New Year. 2023 can be a potent time to reset certain areas of life as well as recommit to nourishing spiritual or wellness practices – with compassion, intention, love, and gratitude for the journey.
